SWOT Report -Zach, Tiffany and Monica

Pearsall:
SWOT Observations
Strengths: your order is placed very quickly, minimal time spent standing in line before ordering, the service is friendly and the product is of good consistent quality, the location is more convenient for older students living on north campus, the coffee is given at the cash register which separates customers who just want to a quick cup to go as opposed to ordering food.
Weaknesses: there is not much organization when waiting for an order of food, during a morning rush many people are cramped together waiting for only an audible signal that their food is ready, the audible signal is only the employees yelling out specific orders, during a rush with lots of people it is difficult to accurately hear what orders are being called out, there is not much seating area in the establishment, making this dunkin donuts more applicable to students that are on the go and only need a quick cup of coffee.
Opportunities: this specific dunkin donuts would be greatly improved if it had a more organized approach to delivering orders to the customers, this could be done with an order number and screen that displays which orders are currently ready to be picked up. The dunkin donuts could also make use of a coffee truck parked on the northwestern side of the main quad, I think this would capture a lot more business from younger students that do not venture passed green street during their daily class schedule.
Threats: One block west is a Starbucks, this establishment is much larger and can accommodate students who wish to stay and work while enjoying their coffee. Two blocks north is an Espresso Royale, this establishment is also larger and can accommodate students for studying, it is also in a better location to attract a larger portion of the student body.

Campus Rec Website Analysis

The University of Illinois campus recreation website effectively communicates news and events to students through an organized layout of pictures and hyperlinks. The application of contrasting colors and overlapping figures creates a unique visual image that is not only lively but also easily navigated for information. The text is consistent throughout the website, using the same font and size for captions while differentiating headings with an alternative color. The bright display of information against the darker background creates a sense of energy in the website, energy that can be associated with the high level of physical activity in campus recreation.

Upon first reviewing the campus recreation homepage, my attention was drawn to the rotating pictures centered at the top. As the pictures shift right in transition, my eyes naturally followed the motion leading to the campus recreation logo in the upper-right corner of the screen. The campus recreation logo is highlighted in the bright orange of the campus it represents, it is also printed in a larger and more abstract font that the rest of the information depicted on the screen. The variations in size, font and color that outline the campus recreation logo on the website were designed to draw focus within the target audience. The focus on detail in the logo may be intended to further develop the theme of activity and participation in campus recreation.

Directly under the campus recreation logo is a convenient mapping of all the different services that campus recreation promotes. The natural flow of motion created in the shifting of pictures and stress on the logo causes the target audience to then transfer into observing this mapping. The mapping allows the target audience to navigate the website towards their desired destination, but it can also be enticing to search through other parts of the website. By making the transition between subject matter so simple on the website, the target audience may absorb more information than intended. Causing the audience to intake all the information regarding the services of campus recreation is the primary focus of the website, and through their website design they have created a natural sense of navigation that relates back to participation in campus recreational activity.

The target audience of the campus recreation website are primarily the students of the university, and because of such they have maintained a website that is bold and simple to grasp the attention of a distracted college student. Through the simplicity of the website outline and ease of its navigation, any student can locate the information that applies to them in a very efficient manner. Less time researching the campus recreation website will allow the student more time for participation in the activities provided. The bold contrasting colors also embody the high level of activity associated with campus recreation. By outlining bright colors with a dark frame, it stresses a healthful outlet in a stressing lifestyle.

Campus recreation has accomplished its goal of informing students of the university in regards to activities and services provided through the use of a well designed website.  The layout provides a natural flow to observe all of the given information, while the information that is displayed remains consistent in text and structure throughout the screen. Overlapping images create a unique style to the webpage while also maintaining the ease of communicating information. The bold contrast of bright, campus colors also amplify the activities associated with campus recreation.

RE: Audience Analysis of Complaint Letter and Peer Review Request

The target audience of my complaint letter is an individual, or group of readers, that have no direct relation with the problems I am describing. The readers receive complaint letters of this nature multiple times a day, and because of such, the target audience is emotionless in regards to sympathy. I may gain credibility in my complaint through the social role of the audience context, as it is a possibility the target audience are also tenants of an apartment complex, and they may be reminded of their own past difficulties in leasing. The postal service or email will be the forums in which the reader receives the complaint letter. These forums will convey the message in computerized text as opposed to the written hand; this may cause a further lack of interest in the personal plea of the complaint.

The target audience of my peer response reply memo is very different from that of the complaint letter, this is because the target audience is a peer with a direct relationship to the topic of writing a complaint letter. Writing this memo for a peer will fill a different social role than the audience of the context letter; as a result the lack of formality may increase the openness of criticism. The context in which this audience will receive the peer response reply will also be more direct, as not only will the reader receive the reply through email but the memo will also be discussed face-to-face in class. The opportunity for discussion allows for a more interactive experience in comparing how both complaints written by each party are structured.
